I’d forgotten how much I love Mexico until I visited Punta de Mita a couple weeks ago. For those not familiar with the area, it is on the west coast near Puerto Vallarta, a short 2 and a half hour flight from Phoenix – quicker than flying to Portland, OR!
Fun Things to Do Here
This part of Mexico has a beautiful coastline offering fantastic snorkeling, kite-surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, and other fun water based activities for those seeking adventure. Punta Mita Adventures took my group snorkeling and stand up paddle boarding – we clambered aboard their boat from the beach of our hotel.
If you’re a landlubber, you can play golf, enjoy the fun “hippie” vibe of Sayulita while perusing the local artisan shops, go off-road in a 4×4, ride horses and more.
For those who just want to relax, enjoy the beach, hit the spa, enjoy fantastic food, or hang by the pool, Punta de Mita has you covered.
What I Loved
What I loved was the serenity of the area compared to Puerto Vallarta and the luxury experiences in the resorts. I was traveling with colleagues and we were on a schedule, but if I were by myself or with family, I could be as relaxed or active as I wanted. I stayed at the St. Regis Punta Mita and the W Punta Mita, both Marriott luxury brands.
St. Regis Punta Mita
The St. Regis Punta Mita is a lovely and elegant property. A private car was waiting for me at the airport and when I arrived at the resort, I was greeted by staff with a cold towel and fresh juice. My room had a fantastic view of one of the pools and the ocean. I also loved my outdoor shower!
The staff, restaurants, spa and activities were amazing. I had one of the best massages of my life and really enjoyed the tequila tasting ritual on the beach before dinner. The weekly signature champagne ritual where they sabre the cork was really fun to watch.
The W Punta Mita
The W Punta Mita is a fun, funky property that appeals to active guests who appreciate the property’s artistic sense of humor. Upon arrival, I was greeted by staff with a cold towel and cold beverage. Since it was lunch time, we headed down to the pool and ate next to the cute Chevycheria bar and restaurant. On Saturdays, a DJ plays music during the day to keep the energy high and the guests entertained.
The rooms are colorful and fun – some with a jungle feel and others with a beach view. The spa was great and I really enjoyed the hydrotherapy area with warm and cold water pools.
You must have dinner at the exclusive Mesa Uno. Reservations are required as there is just one seating per night with a maximum of 12 guests. The innovative 12 course menu with wine pairing was amazing.
